If you read the Book of Acts…

you will see the beginning and expansion of the Apostles’ preaching work throughout the Roman Empire, beginning at Jerusalem. Their preaching focused on the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. This work of Jesus won for the world the forgiveness of all our sins and eternal life. This Sunday’s lesson from Acts describes the very beginning of the Apostles’ preaching, on Pentecost Day, the Old Testament harvest festival, when the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles with the fire of understanding and courage that enabled the Apostles to stand up and witness of Jesus to the very city that cried out for his death 7 weeks earlier. Such division existed in the city through its unbelief. But when Peter preached, God worked a wonder: Many repented and were baptized. Suddenly, through their faith, they entered perfect unity with God and his Word. They accepted the Apostles’ preaching and the very first Christian congregation was brought together, in unity of faith, fellowship, the Lord’s Supper, and prayer. In this unity, the congregation began to share all they had with each other.
